What Is Wise Mind?

In DBT, we often talk about three states of mind:

  • Emotional Mind – where feelings take the wheel

  • Rational Mind – where logic leads the way

  • Wise Mind – the quiet space between the two


Wise Mind is your inner compass. It doesn’t panic or overthink — it simply knows. You already have Wise Mind within you. The practice is learning to access it.

When to Use Wise Mind?

Wise Mind is especially helpful when:

  • You're overwhelmed and can't think straight

  • You're stuck between two choices

  • You're about to react and want to pause

  • You're cycling between emotional collapse and overanalysis

  • You’re struggling with boundaries, conflict, or self-trust
